Writer's Guidelines

At ComputorEdge, our primary editorial concerns are appropriateness of the articles and columns to our readership and the readability of the content that we publish. How much and when we publish material by any one author depends upon how prolific you are, the suitability of the topic, and the readability of your work. By submitting material to ComputorEdge, you are authorizing ComputorEdge to publish it on the ComputorEdge Web site. However, you, as the author, maintain all rights to any future compilations or publishing of your work.

If you have a regular feature that you would like to submit, we may establish it as a column. The name you choose for the column is important, as it will indicate the nature of the content to readers, as well as be used to track your published works on the Web. The column name should be no more than three or four words, as it will appear in links. Artwork provided by the author can be used in the header if there are no copyright infringements. Most column topics should be self-contained pieces that may or may not address the theme of the issue of ComputorEdge in which they are published. If a column submission is extraordinarily long or if it concerns diverse topics, it may be desirable to publish it as a series. If this is the case, it would appear in consecutive issues. (ComputorEdge editors prefer to receive the entire sequence of articles before starting a series. This will provide assurance that the reader won't be “left hanging” if the author runs out of time, or ambition, to complete the work.) It is not mandatory for a column to appear in every issue; however, if you are building a regular readership, consistency is of utmost importance.

Feature articles must be related to the theme of the ComputorEdge issue in which they are published. They should be informative, instructional (how-to), opinion, humor, fiction, or other genres—as long as they are computer and/or Internet related. They should not be in the form of a press release or commercial advertisement. (Press releases will be published, if deemed suitable, in a different section of the Web site.) Feature articles will be accepted based upon the relevance to the issue theme and our readers. They can be any reasonable length. (Short concepts can be submitted as a letter to the editor, or in open columns such as Reader's Personal Product Reviews.) The article should not sound academic. We prefer a more relaxed style that is easy for the reader to follow. Otherwise, you may lose your audience in the first paragraph. Inflammatory material and gratuitous attacks will not be published, although legitimate, reasonable concerns about computer/Internet products and services are relevant.

All editorial submissions will be subject to a readability test. Articles should be well-organized and easy to understand. ComputorEdge editors will perform a quick proof. While we will do minor editing for punctuation and grammar, we will not be able to rewrite or reorganize your work. It is expected that submissions will include all appropriate capitalization and have been run through a spellchecker. If we do not accept your submission, we will give you a brief description of why (i.e., suitability, readability, organization).

Do not include HTML code in your articles unless they are to be published as part of an article. We will format links to other sites or e-mail addresses, which will appear as hotlinks on our Web site. We use special formatting that parses and protects e-mail addresses and other links. We will add bold and italics as necessary, according to your instructions.

Initial submissions should be sent as text in the body of an e-mail to We will not open attachments sent to this address. Once we become familiar with your work and find it to be appropriate, you will be given another e-mail address, from which we will accept attachments.

These Writers Guidelines may seem onerous to some, but the parameters are set for the protection of the writer's reputation, as much as they are for the requirements of ComputorEdge. While we are anxious to help those new to writing, it helps no one to accept anything and everything. If we reply with suggestions for improvement and ask for resubmission, please don't take offense at our suggestions. We appreciate how difficult it is to create readable material.

If you become a contributing writer for ComputorEdge, we hope to help you meet your goals—whether as a writer or in another computer/Internet pursuit. We will publish a short biography of you (written by you, edited by us) with each article or column you write. This may include links to your Web site and/or your e-mail address. All links should be appropriate to the nature of this publication. You will be helping our readers in their endeavors and, if there is a match, we will be helping you to achieve your goals.
